Jo Anne Simon Launches Bid for City Council Seat in Brooklyn's 33rd Councilmanic District; Kicks Off Campaign with Boerum Hill Fundraiser, Unveils Website

Jo Anne Simon, respected attorney, long time community activist and Democratic District Leader will kick off her campaign for City Council today with a Boerum Hill fundraiser and the unveiling of her website, "Jo Anne for Council" (www.joanneforcouncil.com).

Ms. Simon is running for the seat in Brooklyn's 33rd Councilmanic District which encompasses Greenpoint, Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, DUMBO, Fulton Ferry Landing, and parts of Park Slope and Williamsburg.

Assemblywoman Joan L. Millman said, "Jo Anne has been a community leader and activist for years.  I have had the privilege of working with her on numerous issues affecting Brooklyn.  During that time, I have come to trust her judgment, her dependability and her commitment.  From development to transportation to education, Jo Anne has always been on the right side of the issues and a fearless fighter for all Brooklynites."

Alan Fleishman, Ms. Simon's Co-District Leader in the 52nd Assembly District commented, "There is simply no one who can touch Jo Anne's track record in the community.  Her community activism is unparalleled and she's lived and worked in this district for more than 15 years.  She has stood up when it's counted - on Atlantic Yards, on the Gowanus Expressway, on green spaces and environmental hazards - and we know we can continue to count on her in the Council."

"A City Council seat is a real grassroots, roll-up-your-sleeves job," said Ms. Simon. "That's what I'm most comfortable doing, and I'll be ready to do that from day one.  It takes a serious commitment to the community and a positive attitude," she added.

The kick-off fundraiser, "Summertime Sunset Cocktails," will be held tonight from 6 pm - 7:30 pm at Coco Roco Restaurant @ 139 Smith Street (between Bergen and Dean Streets) Boerum Hill.
